Take Your Winter Break Inside

Want to get out of the house, but remain warm inside during your winter break? Try a museum! The Museum of Science has great hands-on exhibits, planetarium shows and live animal encounters. The Boston Children’s Museum has interactive exhibits designed specifically for young children. Inside you’ll find play areas, art studios, and a giant climbing structure.

Our last museum suggestion is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which is known for its impressive art collection, family-friendly tours and activities, and cultivating a unique experience. Another great indoor option is the New England Aquarium, where your kids can explore the wonders of the ocean with penguins, sharks, and giant ocean tanks. It may not come to mind at first, but the Franklin Park Zoo is also a great option with many exhibits, including Tropical Forest, A Bird’s World, and the Kiwi exhibit all indoors. 

Too Cool for the Heat? Spend your Winter Break Outside

Not afraid of a little cold? Well we have some fun winter break ideas for you, too! Growing up in Massachusetts, I often heard my mother say during the winter seasons: “If it’s sunny out- you’re playing outside!”. Try some ice skating out at the Frog Pond at Boston Common– a classic winter activity with a festive atmosphere. Into sledding? Head to Flagstaff Hill, also located in Boston Common, which offers a great spot for sledding with views of the harbor. What about hiking? Make your way to the Blue Hills Reservation and explore scenic trails with varying difficulty levels. You can also try out snowshoeing at the Middlesex Fells Reservation, which has excellent trails for all snowshoeing skill levels.

There’s Always Something to Do in Boston for Winter Break- In OR Outside!

You can also try catching a show at the Boston Ballet, or heading to your local library or community center for special events and workshops during school vacation week. We definitely recommend booking in advance for anything that involves tickets. If you’re driving into town- make sure to think about parking ahead of time. Google search parking and/or parking garages nearby your destination.

Check for discounts as many of these attractions will offer discounts for children, seniors, and families. Make sure to pack layers as our winters can be unpredictable, and plan for breaks throughout the day to eat and relax.
