Thanksgiving Decor Activities for Kids: A Festive Family Fun
Nanny away this week? Kids out of school? You’ve come to the right blog! Thanksgiving is a time for family, food, and gratitude. Why not make it even more special by creating festive decorations with your little ones? These simple yet adorable crafts are perfect for kids of all ages and will add a touch of warmth and cheer to your Thanksgiving table and home.
1. Leaf-Shaped Placemats: You’ll need construction paper in autumn colors (red, orange, yellow, brown), glue stick, markers or crayons, and scissors. Trace large leaf shapes onto the construction paper and cut them out when finished- you can use any cookie cutters, printouts from the computer, or even large leafs from your yard, as a tracing tool. Let your child decorate the leaves with markers or crayons, and then glue the leaves onto a piece of construction paper to create a placemat.
For added durability- you might want to laminate the placemats. If you’re like us and don’t have a laminator at home, you can take the kids to Staples or an office supply store and use theirs. Your kids will love watching their creation be protected and used on the table!
2. Thankful Turkey Handprint: If you made the leaf shaped placements, you should have construction paper left over to use in brown and white. You’ll also need child-safe, non toxic brown craft paint, googly eyes, a glue stick, and a marker. Paint your child’s handprint in brown paint on white construction paper, and leave it out to dry completely.
Once dry, cut out the handprint and glue it onto a larger piece of brown construction paper. Then have your child draw or glue on a beak and wattle (the turkey neck), and glue google eyes to the turkey’s head. Next let them write thankful on a banner of construction paper and glue it above the turkey. You can skip this and just write with marker instead!
3. Cornucopia Craft: For this one, you’ll need more brown construction paper, tissue paper in autumn colors (yellow, orange, red), glue, a stapler, and scissors. Roll the brown construction paper into a cone shape and staple together. Let your kids safely cut or rip up the tissues paper into small squares, and crumble them all up. Next, glue the tissues pieces to the inside of the cone to create a cornucopia filled with “fruits & vegetables”. If you have a large table, you can make several to space out along the length of it. Smaller gathering? Give each guest a cornucopia with their name on it as a place setting, or keep them blank to use again next year.
4. Thanksgiving Table Runner: This craft is a little different than the others, and so you’ll need burlap or canvas fabric, fabric paint or makers, and stencils. After measuring and trimming the canvas or fabric to fit your table, lay it flat on a clean and protected surface. Use the fabric paint or markers to create designs on the fabric. You can use stencils for leaves, pumpkin or turkeys. It might be fun to have the kids free hand them, so you have their precious drawings frozen in time. Let the paint dry completely over night (preferably outside so it can air out well) and add to your table.
Tips for a Successful Craft Session:
- Prepare the workspace: Cover your work area with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect it from paint and glue.
- Gather all materials: Have all the necessary supplies within easy reach to avoid interruptions.
- Set a timer: Use a timer to keep the craft session focused and prevent boredom.
- Encourage creativity: Let your child’s imagination run wild and don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors and techniques.
- Make it a family affair: Get involved and participate in the crafting process. It’s a great way to bond with your child and create lasting memories.
