Are your kids in a weird in-between stage when it comes to childcare? Do you still need help around the house but not sure how you can combine household management, nanny, housekeeper, maybe even some administrative work into a part or full time position?
Enter: a Family Assistant. Similar to a personal or executive assistant to a CEO, a family assistant works under a large umbrella when it comes to potential duties and tasks. Someone in this role acts as a family’s personal assistant. The best way to think of them is – having an extra responsible adult to keep the household going! Family Assistant duties can include but are not limited to: childcare, child transportation, meal planning and prepping, groceries and cooking, errands and greeting vendors, pet care & transportation, family or business trip planning & itinerary making. Keep in mind- responsibilities can vary greatly based on the family’s needs.
How is this any different from a Household Manager, you may ask? A household manager focuses on the house, of course, while the focus of a Family Assistant is going to be the family that resides in it. You can find your Household Manager managing or assisting in managing other household staff, making sure the home is ready to host/entertain, making sure all regular pantry and household items are stocked, greeting vendors and overseeing their work, errands and grocery shopping, upkeep the house while you are away. Typically a household manager is having little interaction with any children, if any. A family assistant can jump into whichever role is needed, and with full time hours- could take on the role of full time household manager and/or housekeeper, and after school nanny.
While children will age out of needing a nanny, the many tasks the nanny may have been helping with (packing lunches, grocery shopping, emptying the dishwasher, any shopping/supplies needed for school and activities, etc) will fall to the same adults who were too busy to do it in the first place. Unlike children, a house can’t grow up and take care of itself.
